Yes it is closed for a while longer.  The posted detour is to take I-26 & I-81. 
 The Blue Ridge Parkway or the road through Smoky Mountain National Park is 
also possible for non-commerical traffic.

Indeed, the gap in the yellow line for I-40 is ominous.
