I think Michigan defines up to two cartons of cancer sticks as
personal, and more than two cartons you're assumed to be an unlicensed
dealer trafficking in untaxed goods.
Don't know about booze, but just think how many bottles of distilled
spirits a full timer in a motor home has in a well stocked liquor
cabinet. The Canadians just love to tell one of those 70 year old guys
that he and his wife can't come in unless he leaves $500 worth of
booze with the customs workers. If they were just taking the short
route from Michigan to New York, they invariably take the longer route
through Ohio and vow to boycott Canada for the rest of their lives.
