Akroyd's engine sounds more like a glow plug model airplane engine - you heat the glow plug for starting the engine, then the combustion heat keeps the plug hot enough to support combustion on the next compression stroke. Contrast this with a Diesel model airplane engine that only has a screw on the top of the cylinder head to adjust the amount of compression. They are started with ether - very easy to ignite with a little compression heat.
