Dan,

i've successfully negotiated for replacement value on a totaled car that was more than twice what the insurance company offered me by showing proof of what cars similar to mine were selling for in my area at the time. (KBB and Edmunds pricing weren't really relevant). you might want to arm yourself with the knowledge of the market value before they start talking to you, since repairs like what you're talking about could quite easily become rather expensive.

all that said, i agree that that car isn't particularly special and wouldn't be too attached to it if repairs exceed the cars value; negotiate for what it's really worth and use the settlement to go get something else. in this market, you shouldn't have any trouble finding a nice used car!

cheers!

That's all I care about - as a matter of convenience I would rather have the
car repaired then a check. I just have concerns about the outcome due to the
age and value of the car, that's all.

I would suspect this is all going to hinge on the extent of the repairs
necessary to restore it to working order. According to my son, the body damage
isn't significant, but the steering and LF drive axle are hosed up.

Thanks to all for the information - more as I know it.
