its the R4 compressor. When the belts are new, they seem like they will
not go on at all. I usually put the compressor end on, and get the
engine side on as good as I can, bump the starter, and it will pull the
belt over the rest of the way.

Kaleb gets the fish. Put a new belt on the AC compressor (the old one
rather energetically dissociated it appears), and a new PS pump belt,
and got the compressor belt as tight as I could (the tightener nut
thing is now under the refrigerant hose, and inaccessible. The screw
thingie was not long enough to leave the spacer in. I think the belt
might be a tad short, as I had the compressor all the way loose [which
in itself was not pleasant to do for some reason] and it barely fit
over the pulleys. I did manage to get it tight by prying [again not
particularly fun]) so all looked fine. Fired that sucker up and hit
the AC button, and the air BLOWS ICE COLD now (well, at least fairly
cool). So the compressor seems OK, I guess that belt just got
stretched and finally let go, per Kaleb's report on the grawnching
sounds from the compressor with a loose belt.
I could not tell what kind of compressor it is, it had a label on the
bottom that was all crapped up and faded, I peeled it off to try to
get it out where I could see it better, and VOID VOID VOID appeared
all over the stuff left on the compressor and the back of the top of
the label, which made it even harder to read. I can't tell what it
says on it. The compressor itself is just a round can, about 3in
thick, with the various fittings coming off it.

Im sure they can stretch, the belts loosen. Its really a mess
sometimes to get it right.

The belt has to be REALLY tight, otherwise it will flop around and
make noise that sounds like the compressor is going out.
In my W123, I have had trouble with the belt staying tight. I think I
have all the clamping bolts tight but it will be loose again in a week
or two. Do the belts stretch much?
