Find out what a replacement knuckle will cost. Sometimes cheaper to replace
than repair.

Subject: [MBZ] sheared off bolt in knuckle

I was removing the bolt in the bottom of my Subaru steering knuckle this
evening with an impact wrench and it sheared off the bolt head. This setup
is somewhat similar to the way a Mercedes ball joint stud is secured in the
bottom of a 124/201 knuckle. It make me wonder if I was wrong to use air
power on it? I noticed it didn't come off with my 3/8" ratchet so I just
went with air since it was out for the strut bolts and 32 mm axle nut. Now
I'll aim to remove the ball joint nut and take the knuckle to the machine
shop with the ball joint installed. From a pure utilitarian point of view I
guess I don't have to have that repaired until the ball joint gets replaced,
but that seems overly sloppy work, so I figure I can have the machine shop
do what's necessary to get that bolt out and put a new one in. I'm
considering doing it myself. I already applied Kroil so maybe an EZ-out
will do the job?
