Several thoughts on the subject.

Consumer versions of Symantec Norton are resource hogs as someone else noted. 
If you could get a copy of Norton AV Corporate (Pirated probably) it a very 
light on resources and works quite well.
I use Online Armour for a firewall. It works great. As far as AV on my windows 
machines, MS Security Essentials works well, and is light on resources. I also 
use Avira free version on my teenagers computers. It works very well.
