_Version_ of Linux?  Maybe you mean a distribution?

All it takes is the "partimage" for fancy work or "dd" for
simple stuff.  Partimage understands sparse file systems and can
use gzip or bzip (maybe more) compression so the image of the
partition is smaller than the original.

I think both of those are very common. I know grml, SystemRescue
(my two current favorite service live CDs)  and Knoppix have
them.  Most likely any live CD distribution will.
