The tach does not attach to the transmission, but the speedo cable does. The speedo cable attaches at the rear of the tranny, drivers side. You do not need to remove it there to get the cluster out. I have never had a problem getting my hand back behind the cluster to unscrew the cable. You usually have to unplug the big round electrical cable first, that will let you turn it to the side a bit more to get your hand back there.
