Got the MacBook switched off and called the ISP. Turned out that the ISP
entries for a MacBook are different than those for a PC, which were the ones
I was trying to use.
Mail is working well now.
I was looking for a way to reset to defaults while trying to get mail set
up, so knowing about PRAM will be useful in the future for a MacBook newbie.

You might also want to reset the PRAM. This won't hurt anything - it just
takes all the system settings back to the defaults. You won't even see a
change.
Hold down P-R-Option (alt)-Command (Apple) keys, then power up. Continue
holding this key combination down until the machine does it's characteristic
"bong" tone, and keep holding down until it restarts.

#1. Force quit mail. I forget what the key combination for
force quit is, option-command something, I'm sure Google
knows.
#2. Hold the power button for 30 seconds (feels like
forever) which will shut the computer off. Remember this if
you're in an unintended acceleration Toyota too, press and
HOLD.
