No gasket - just a good bead of urethane.  Check for any signs of rust around 
the frame; the two fore/aft trim pieces pull up at the base of the hood hinge 
point to remove, you can tie them off to each side view mirror to hold out of 
the way, and then use a plastic wedge to pry out the top frame piece - all 
three 
trim pieces are simply pushed down into friction fit clamps.

My '95 E300 had a poorly done replacement windshield; the installers did not 
properly prime/paint the scratches in the metal frame prior to installing the 
new glass, so a $250 job turned into a $800 job.

Also look at the rubber gasket along the base of the windshield on either side 
of the mono-wiper; if it doesn't lay flat, you may have to replace that.  The 
plastic gutters underneath are also fragile and subject to breaking.

Subject: [MBZ] E420 and windshield replacement

The windshield on the E420 has some cracks running across it and I think
I'm going to have to replace it. Q says there is no gasket like on the
W123. Anything else I should know about before I get it done?
