The MB V-6s, having 90 deg V-angles, use one chain driven balance shaft to 
damp out the shakes. As a result, the 4-cam M-272 engine in my car is silky 
smooth at all engine speeds.

BTW, balance shafts have been around since about 1912 so they are hardly 
new technology.
