It may be more trouble than you want to get into, but I frequently see
DIN-size AM/FM/cassette car stereos at the thrift stores for $10-20.
Mostly factory takeouts from low-end '90s Japanese cars.  The catch is
that they usually have some stupid proprietary connector on the back
and no wiring diagram, but if you're willing to experiment a
little....  Otherwise, there are plenty of cheapo Chinese stereos on
fleaBay, some with actual knobs on the front, for under $50.
