According to the hitches available to the germans, 2000kg (4400lbs). Buy one of these: http://www.kupplung.de/anhaengerkupplung/mercedes-benz-e-klasse-w211.html?KTYPNR=16564
I bought one for my '95 E320 wagon and its very nice. Installation was quite easy with the included wiring harness. No modification to the car's wiring was necessary, everything plugged in. The euro ball is fixed and about 2". You can kind of see it in this picture: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jaimekop/5298585478/ You can probably get a US aftermarket one also. I went with the german one due to the much higher weight rating and higher quality wiring harness.
