I added more r134 by heating the can and being patient.  Now I have proper 
gauge 
reading on high side but still vacuum on suction side, when it should be about 
15 to 20 psi.  AC works well for about five minutes, and then stops working.  
Compressor is still engaged, but no refrigerant visible in sight glass, so I've 
got a blockage somewhere.  I guess it could be blocked in the receiver/dryer or 
in the condenser.

Don't know if it's possible on r134a systems, but I've
more than once had issues with the r12 feed valve not being
fully opened, and the system thus wouldn't 'take' what
was being offered it.
