I recently did it on my '82 300SD. The gearbox on your car is identical.
Simple job.Lift car high enough to get under it.
Make sure position of steering arm is marked. If not, mark it.
Remove sterring arm with puller.
Remove internal Circlip.
Drill small hole (1/8") in to seal and screw in wood screw for pulling seal.
Use a 1" PVC pipe coupling to drive new seal home.
Reassemble.

Noticed a very small leak from the steering gear
on my '83 300D yesterday. Fluid level still on the
mark.
Someone mentioned putting an MB on a lift and
and replacing the shaft seal but I don't remember
which model/year.
Does anyone know if the shaft seal can be replaced
without removing the steering gear on an '83 300D?
Thanks,
Gerry
