Oh god not a Prius! How about a Jetta diesel? Around 20K new, gives around 45
mpg and is a real car, not some cheesoid entomomorphic wannabe spaceship.

I'm thinking a 2008 hybrid Prius with the comforts this old body wants will
run about $18K. I have wondered about some of the new Hyundai models, but
do not want a stripped down model, even though we have the S320 for road
trips. Worth looking at, but and extra 10 mpg is not a small thing either,
and these days I do mostly around town errands [50+ mpg with the Prius].
Driving @12K miles a year I don't suppose a small mpg difference will matter
too much. I'm looking seriously at the Prius, but could be persuaded to
look elsewhere.

If you want high mileage in a small car, why spend so much on the car? I
think
Hyundai offers a model for about $7k that gets over 40 mpg; those economics
make
more sense to me.

I'll suggest that to him. We are working out a trade whereby he does a lot
of time consuming small stuff that I can't do and can't afford to pay
$70/hour to have repaired, and when I get a new car this year he will adopt
my baby into his home. I'm not sure either of our wives would actually
appreciate learning what a turbine sounds like, though I could end up with a
new car sooner than expected. I'm looking seriously at a Prius, which would
save me about $1,300/year in fuel costs. My cousin just hit 100K on his
with no problems, and loves it. @50 mpg at $3.30/gal beats 22 mpg at
$3.85/gal by a long shot. I'll be down to one MB in the family then and no
diesel, but it seems that a 30 YO car is not the best choice for me, though
it is still a wonderful road machine with a strong engine and good tranny
and doesn't look too bad.
Maybe if my cardiac stem cell infusion perks my heart up a bit I can think
about another diesel someday.

Instead of another rusty old muffler with 5-6" of pipe on it, why don't you
weld
in 5-6' of brand new pipe? Show the people behind you what a turbine sounds
like.
