I have a similar issue. My 76 300D has a nice looking spare in the
trunk. Shiny like someone has covered it with some form of protectant
stuff in the past. But it looks old. I have not looked for a date on it
but I admit I would have some concern about using it. I would not want
to travel at high speed on it and I would not want to be left along the
roadway with a flat tire and a blown spare.
I should replace it.
BUT tires these days are very good. Hence the mini spares and some
vehicles without any spare tires. Cell phones have made it easy to call
for help. So, a bit of a toss up. Do I or don't I???

The spare tire in my '95 E300D shows a manufacture date of Dec '93.
Since these last of the 124's seem to have been assembled in the spring and
summer of '94,
that tire is probably the original spare.
It has spent its life nice and covered and protected in the tire well,
and apparently only came out for a few days of use during emergencies.
The tire looks new and shows no checking or any other visible signs of
aging.
I know there is a big fear of using "old" tires. But what really ages
tires?
Is it UV (sun) and ozone? Or extreme temperatures and road beating?
Vapors and chemicals on pavements? Or do the rubber compounds continue to
react or polymerize?
This tire is almost old enough to vote. So is it too hazardous to use as a
spare?
