I might could have done that with Gump, but there are three bolts with
springs that sort of rust welded themselves together. Had to sawzall
the thing or your method would have resulted in a new manifold and
possibly engine
clay

Its too late for this advice, but in the past I was able to break and
exhaust system free from the manifold by dropping it down off of all
the
rubber hangers and swinging it side to side a bit from the end at
the back
of the car. The torque on that length of pipe is huge.
Just don't go too crazy or you might break the exhaust manifold.
But this
is unlikely since the weakest point should still be the joint
between the
manifold and exhaust pipe.
Of course, soaking it with lots of penetrating oil first is necessary.

So unbolting the '83 exhaust at the flange worked well, the 2 bolts
broke
nicely and it all came out. However I still couldn't get the front
pipe
detached from the rest and I ended up cutting the first couple
inches of the
front exhaust pipe. A quick trip to FLAPS got me a 2" exhaust pipe
adapter
which this morning I welded into place. My welding is definitely
getting
better, I got only a couple little divots in it, none of which
appears to go
all the way through. A quick spritz of grill paint should keep the
weld from
rusting. I only expect this exhaust to be good for a couple three
years
anyway...
Next step, getting the old rotten exhaust out from under the '78
while
preserving 2 rubber donuts, I have 2 in my spares pile... I'll
order 2 (4
really so I have spares) more from Rusty next week so I don't have
to trust
the used ones.
