The regulator and brushes are a unit held onto the back of the alternator, as Rusty said. (from maybe 1968 on.) You didn't identify the particular model and year you have. THis works for 123, 124 and 126 and many other models.

It is held on with two screws.
Disconnect neg battery terminal
disconnect the wire retainer over the big electric plug on the back of the Alt. Remove the big elect plug and do something to hold it out of the way. (position, wire or tape) remove two small screws (3mm dia?) most require a small to med straight blade screwdriver

Pull/tip the brush set out.

Rusty has them available for a good price 800 741 5252

FLAPS may have a 3 rd party set that does not fit quite right.

When putting the new brush set in, it is hard to get the new set in without breaking off the brushes or one brush. One trick it to use a strip of thin cardboard (matchbook cover type) to wrap around the brushed and the regulator to hold the brushes in all the way. Tape the cardboard on the outside of the reg.

Insert brushes into position
remove the cardboard with one hand while you hold the brushes in place with the other hand
Wiggle the brush/reg set as needed to get the cardboard out
put the two screws in and reassemble in reverse order.

I am looking for the voltage reg on a couple 126's - an 82 380SEL and an 83 300SD
can someone please tell me where they hang out
THANKS

Steve
