I didn't and I have no desire to buy a $1500 car that needs $2000 in work...
  A $3500 car thats in good shape I'd consider though....

Sure.  The reality is that there's no one "silver bullet" alternative 
energy source that will replace petroleum.  It'll be an assortment of 
sources, and biofuels is one arrow in that quiver.
