Particularly the gasification of slash. We have forest thinning projects going on around here all the time. The byproduct is timber too small to be of commercial value. It is typically just piled up and burned, a terrible waste. Using it to produce wood gas and biochar is brilliant. Biochar, which is basically charcoal crushed to a powder, turns out to be an enormous fertility improver in the soil. It doesn't break down for a couple of centuries, at least, sequestering a good deal of carbon. It greatly increases the soil's water holding capacity and provides a matrix for microbes and fungi to colonize, which is key to healthy soil.
