You DON'T replace the bearings, you replace the complete arm/bearing assembly. I've done it half a dozen times without any problem. If the threads ARE damaged, you MAY not be able to use the damaged cover or if you use it, it may fail unexpectedly.

I don't know what to tell you other than do the best you can and keep an eye on it.
