I can't recall how much fuel I had in the tank whenever I changed my fuel
filters, but I do know I always filled up the main filter with diesel or
some additives to ensure a smooth start.  I used to use the clear
pre-filters to judge how clean my fuel was.  Changing them no sooner than
60,000 miles was not uncommon with clean, fresh fuel.
