There is a material you can buy that preserves the paint gun [keeps it from rusting etc]
Paint thinner? That's what I use. Once I switched to storing it with thinner sitting in it no more frozen check valves, it's ready to run whenever I need it. I pump paint through it outside until it looks like just paint is coming through, then go a-paintin'. Clean with water, then thinner and store.
