If by "very close" you mean "I can easily walk to work" then you will
need an apartment or condo in or near the loop.  Those are fairly
expensive.  Forget about driving to work unless your job has perqs like
a private parking spot or you can budget to pay for parking at work and
also at your apartment building.  I'd advise you to seriously
contemplate living without a car at all.

If you aren't living in walking distance, then look for a place near the
el or on a good bus route.  Unless you buy a house, you will likely
either need to park on the street, which is a pain because the street
cleaning blackouts mean you are constantly moving your car around, or
pay for a spot at your apartment.  Very few apartments will include free
parking.

Housing prices vary wildly based on location.  Literally within a few
blocks you could have an order of magnitude difference in rent or
values, and these are always changing as areas become trendy or fall out
of vogue.  The west and south sides are known as "bad" areas but there
are a few pockets (e.g. Hyde Park/University of Chicago area on the
south side) that are decent.
