I didn't know that, but the bug was quickly remade into the Kubelwagen (a jeep
essentially)...it saw wide service (aka the THING, when it came to the US). An
amphibious version was the schwimmwagen and a special 4WD with huge tire
version for SS officers was called the Kommander?-Wagen.

One of Hitlers first acts as Chancellor was a visit to the Berlin auto show
where he scolded the German car industry for building the best cars in the
world, but not a practical one that the average German could afford. He
compared ownership rates to the US. Porsche eventually visited Ford (awarded
the highest medal a foreigner ever received from the Reich for his help in
increasing industrial production in Germany - his views on Jews dove-tailed
with the Nazis, yet he helped to send tanks to the Soviets
later...capitalist!) to learn about cheap mass production. Hitler promoted
racing by heavily funding both MB and Auto Union (if you're the master race,
you need to win - and they did). The result was the VW plant at KdF Stadt (now
Wolfsburg)...the car was built under a Nazi agency: Kraft durch Freude
(Strength through Joy) and, IMO, it was a great thing. VERY cheap cruises,
trips, and all sorts of programs to raise the general wllbeing of the working
class. VW was a
state owned plant/project integrated into this agency's mission. Nto to be
confused with the RAD (Reich Arbeiter Deinst), which was similiar to our WPA,
also a good thing, IMO.

I WOULD like to know more about the rear-engine, air-cooled MB's of the era.
Saw a picture of 1 once. It was NOT a VW built at Untertuerkheim, but MB's own
design - yet similar from the outside.

Also interesting is the story of an American GI who became friends with a
top MB executive right after the war. I forget the names of both. THe German
liked to hunt, but was not allowed to have guns and the GI had the guns. They
hit it off. THe GI was hired at MB as an exec...went home to the US to gather
his stuff and moved back to Germany and worked as an MB exec for decades.
Interesting story.

Another being, legend has it, that it be able to run in any climate
found in the Third Reich, once the Nazis had won the war---from North
Africa to Siberia. Hence air-cooling, since cooling systems in '30s
watercooled cars, before modern antifreeze formulations, tended to
either freeze or boil over at the drop of a hat.

Gary,
I apologize if I offended you in my previous post but I wouldn't even
THINK about getting on my PC and typing before at least doing a THOROUGH
search for the missing firearm. I am not being hysterical and you shouldn't
either. Also, the ease of purchase of an AK in GA means nothing. Yours is
gone and if it kills someone and can be proven to be yours YOU are
responsible for that either morally or legally. If some"criminal" took your
rifle then why only that one? Are you sure you put it back in the trunk
before you left where you were shooting? If your trunk was locked and you
put the gun in there who had access to your keys? My 123 240D trunk unlocked
with the door locks.....Does yours do that?
Don't know about you but it sounds like a kid wanting to have something to
show off to his buddies if it actually is missing. He wouldn't care about,
or probably notice, the lack of ammo or a mag but the "HEY LOOK GUYS...CHECK
OUT WHAT I GOT!!" factor of an AK-47 assault rifle to a teen could make
snagging one out of some guys trunk a pretty tempting thought.
As for the urgency of the situation IF it is missing and IF the thief has
ammo and IF he knows where you live and that you have more unloaded weapons
and IF just your wife or kid is home and IF he wants to steel more guns and
IF someone startles him and IF your family member gets shot and IF they
die............You get the point about all of the IF's in your statement?
And what IF you called the cops and they found the kid before all of this
happened?
I know all of that is unlikely but ALOT of UNLIKELY things seem to happen
in the oddest of places in our world these days..........I would be
terrified if one of my rifles were to come up missing! Just the thought of
someone getting killed because I should have paid more attention to my
firearm would be devastating to me.

well, i've never lost a gun before, so i really wasn't sure what the
standard procedure is. it wasn't loaded so some kid would have trouble
shooting someone with it. it has no magazine either. granted, all of that
could be simply remedied but it would make it less likely that some kid
would kill someone with it. more likely, i'd think, it was sold to
criminals on the cheap if it was taken.

these weapons are relatively easy to acquire in the state of georgia.
anyone can go to any gun show and buy one. I bought mine in a parking lot
of a crowded publix supermarket on a saturday afternoon from a gun nut with
a van full of "assault rifles". this transaction took place in plain site
of not only shoppers, but also a police cruiser on patrol. Buying an AK-47
is no big deal here.

as for hte urgency of the situation, if hte gun is not actually out of my
possession, no one can be killed by it. and if it is out of my possession,
searching would not bring it back and prevent its use in a violent crime. I
cannot help the situation much as my failure is not a present one, but the
past failure of losing my weapon. As I have never been in this position
before, I was asking more out of an interest in what protocol would be.

my trunk was locked. i never have a firearm out of my immediate possession
that is not locked. it is simply gone and i don't yet know how. right now
i'm mostly trying to locate the serial number so i can report it missing.

i'm not sure my attitude is all that "oh well.'' I am profoundly upset by
this. It's a disgrace to have your firearm disappear on you and a serious
breach of a shooter's unwritten code. losing your firearm is terrible thing
the likes of which i never thought would happen to someone like me. I don't
believe anyone will be killed or injured on account of this and, even if
there is a risk of this happening, i don't believe that getting hysterical
can do anything but further erode the situation.
