Prior to my last car purchase I looked carefully at Jettas and Passats, with
the Jetta wagon being high on my list.

I found, through non-scientific research, that the 1.8l engine could be a
potential time bomb if not properly maintained.  That pushed me away from any
cars with that powerplant.

The remaining things I took away from this exercise was that VWs, while in
general are good cars, seem to have a potential for a lot of little niggling
issues and parts are expensive relative to similar cars in their class.

Too bad, as I really like Jettas and would still like to have one....

A couple years ago (2008?) a friend bought (against my advice) an '01 Jetta
1.8T. Quick car but it had obviously been neglected, rear shocks were toast
among other things.

It had something like 105,000 miles and his Indy said to do the timing belt. He
put it off waiting for a 110,000 mile service. Before another week passed the
timing belt snapped and that was all she wrote. He'd owned the car maybe 2
months and still owed around $10k.

So a $3k rebuild later he was back on the road but constantly nickle and dimed
to death. He finally traded it on a Kia or some such Asian driving appliance.

My point here is not that a Jetta is a bad car but one where neglect will lead
to an especially bad experience.

The TDI is reportedly a decent engine but VW diesels don't do well being
flogged.  The italian tunup is not something you want to do.  Drive them
gently and they will do OK.  I'm talking mostly about the older NA
diesels; don't know to what extent this applies to the TDI.

With any VW do NOT negelect the timing belt maintenance interval.
