T'was the timing chain cover. Fred provided a replacement after one I bought
had a stripped hole for the tensioner.
I think a bad tensioner bearing killed the old cover.

Of course it also needed a rear wheel bearing, front wheel bearings, drag link,
idler arm, rear shocks, rear links, rear subframe mounts, motor mounts, a
radiator, shifter bushings, the parking brake handle cover (its nice to have a
parts car), the central locking vac pump connected correctly, the fuel tank
lock connected correctly, proper coolant, proper oil, tires, a wee little bit
of rust repair and it needs a good polish which I'll probably have done in the
spring.

I figure I'm into it about $4000 right now which really isn't bad for a 190D
2.2l with less than 200,000 miles. I wish it had a 5spd but its not a bad car
to drive and only about 1mpg worse than my last one which did have a 5spd.

hey Curt, what was the deal with yours, I remember that story but cant
remember what it ended up being instead of a broken chain.
