FWIW, I figured how to get around those dissapearing threads.
Make a Label "Old" or something, apply this label to the posts you think you
don't need and archive it.
When a new reply is posted to this thread, it shows up in the Inbox.
When you fill your 2 gig space (maybe a couple years?), clean the folder up.
