Rubbing/polishing compound while being careful to watch what's happening to nearby paint - careful not to take too much - Goldilocks it - take just the right amount.

I'd assume you can just compound it off... if its faded, it almost gone
anyway.

My W123 had a faded strip too... I need to repair a dent in the front
fender first, but I'm looking forward to having the stripe redone.
