Use the Euro cat. Is the cat subject to a state or fed inspection?

Dieselvolk,

Rusty has not been able to source a cat for my '95 E300, only choice for the
real-deal part is a real-deal dealership, $1600 plus shipping.

However, I've found a source for a Euro cat, $500 includes shipping. Local welder would like a couple hundred to fabricate a "test pipe", plus I'd lose
use
of the vehicle for a day or two while he works on the exhaust system removed
from the car.

Should I roll the dice and order this?

It is made by Klarius/Quinton Hazell, their part number 321788, made to
replace
MB part 124 490 5020. MB 124 490 5020 is for the ECE market, 124 sedan with
same engine as mine.  The next part downstream is the center exhaust;
identical
part numbers between ECE and US version, which seems to indicate that the
dimensions for this Euro cat must be the same as my US cat (bolts to same
engine
exhaust manifold part numbers up front, mates with same center exhaust in
back).

Why is this part so much less expensive? Probably doesn't perform to the same
level as the US spec cat, I'll bet.

Very respectfully,
