Jerry, Rain-x is a synthetic hydrophobic that is applied to glass surfaces to allow water to bead and run off.
Just as you see water bead and run off a freshly waxed painted surface, Rain-x does much the same. For that matter, if you buy the product and apply it to your windshield, you rarely have to turn your wipers on. I have used it since it originally came on the market when it was sold through dealers much like Amsoil is. Good stuff, but follow the instructions closely so it is applied properly. As for the wiper insert issue, I suspect it's a combination of costs, profit margins and convenience for the consumer...
