Cracked radiator neck perhaps? It might hold a vacuum but maybe not pressure... Also: not sure on the 616, but the early 617 engines had a bleed screw on the thermostat cover. If you don't bleed, the thermostat may not open properly. So if you have a leak and lots of air gets in you'll need to bleed the air trapped in the thermostat cover.
