I guess I probably need to cut the cat out and just install a straight pipe.

Cats can plug up. And explode under the car. A buddy has a Nissan P/U with a
plugged converter.
....The thing that has me confused though is if the exhaust was
plugged from sitting why would it be fine all day then all the sudden
just have the problem? If it wasnt getting fuel could it run lean
enough to cause the exhaust to glow red hot?
They don't plug completely, but cause a lot of flow restriction, which
causes the reaction heat to intensify. If it would have been running lean, I
don't beliefe it would have gotten that hot. The catalyst causes unburned
carbons and partially burnt carbons (carbon monoxyde) to react with oxygen
(burn, if you will), which causes heat.
I guess my first plan is to unhook the exhaust and see what happens. If
it runs fine then we
know the exhaust has problems. The exhaust that is on it now was not
the 380 exhaust, but the newer looking stainless steel exhaust that was
on the 500SE parts car. Anybody have any thoughts?
