For single-serving or small batches of coffee the best thing I've ever found is the Aeropress.
It's an immersion or "steep" and pressure method of brewing concentrated espresso-style shots. Uses a paper filter so no sediments or grounds in your cup. You top off with hot water for coffee (this is similar to an "Americano" you would get at a coffee shop).
