I finally got around to checking the valve adjustment on my 83
300SD. It has been starting well (3 or 4 seconds preglow with my
manual push button system) and sounding good but it had been 31,000
miles since the last adjustment when I bought the car. The manual
says 15,000 mile intervals.
The valves were just a wee bit tight. The intakes (supposed to
be at .10 mm) all passed easily a .068 mm feeler gauge but not a
.103, the nearest I have to what the manual specifies. The exhausts
(supposed to be at .35 mm) all passed a .330 but not a .353. The
adjustments to put them all right were tiny.
I attribute the lack of wear to the use of Mobil 1 15-50
synthetic which I have been changing at 3-4000 mile intervals. I am
planning now to go 50,000 miles before next checking the adjustment,
assuming no hard starting or unusual noises.

You can say a lot of bad things about pedophiles but at least
they drive slowly past schools.
