I thought the 2.5 transmission was first gear start? Even if the solenoid is not getting power, it would not completely disable first.
Is the cable that controls shift timing connected & adjusted correctly? Considering though it still doesn't work with the lever in 2, I'm guessing it's an internal fault. Perhaps try a dexIII fluid & filter change with some lubegard additive to start? Just throwing out ideas....
