The technical transmission series numbers aren't my best subject, (very complicated, little data access) but I always understood the red were for 1980-1985 non turbo diesel automatic cars, the 722.2xx trans, and the green were for the 1981-1985 722.3xx transmissions for the turbo 300 diesels, and a black one was used in the 722.4 transmissons, which made it into some of the 1985 300 turbo diesels. This information is only considerate of US market W123s, I don't know what variences and similaries exist for the 1978-1985 300SD, but I think largely the same rules would apply.
