You put the dial indicator mounting hardware on such that the dial indicator moves 2 mm from its rest position when it is in place. Once the dial indicator has moved the 2 mm from its rest position, you move the hub/disk in and out to see how much free play there is in the wheel bearing. The free play should be 0.01 to 0.02 mm (0.0004 to 0.0008 inch).
