Before electric turn signals on cars, hand signals were part of the driving test and police would ticket people who didn't use them; even in freezing cold weather when rolling down the window was unpopular. I've read that "Birds" or "giving someone the finger", originated as a variation on hand signals during that time. Someone got the bright idea of rolling the window part way down in cold weather, sticking out the hand, and pointing left, or up (right), with one finger. The finger pointing may have morphed into "giving someone the finger".
