I think theres a limit to the amount of temperature cycling any solder joint can take. The 9" Mac computers, especially the oldest ones, the 128k and 512k had solder joints that would eventually fail and need touching up. I had to do this on my Mac Plus at one point, fortunately the point that failed (Ram if I remember correctly) was noticably different looking than the rest. -Curt Date: Tue, 3 Jan 2006 12:07:58 -0500 From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [MBZ] Controller Solder Joints To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset="iso-8859-1"; reply-type=original
Howdy - The Porsche list has been talking about DME relay failures caused by solder joint failures. Don't know if this is a reflection of German solder or soldering proceedures, but the control boxes on the 240D & other models (that I'm less familiar with) suffer from solder joint failures. Specifically, the cruise control controller and the glow plug relay both can be taken apart and their solder joints examined and failed joints re-soldered. Several email list members have done this. Also, the controllers are sold on a exchange basis and I assume they're refurbishing them by restoring the solder joints. I assume there a spec for the solder mat'l and the proceedure is probably defined somehow as the heat needed, time to heat the joint, ?? anything else? You can find them on eBay sometimes. Failing that, try eBay.de... some of the aftermarket parts vendors accept PayPal, ship worldwide and can communicate easily in English. Shipping is not as bad as you might think (given how much USPS rates have increased in the last two years). Search under "K=FChlergrill" Mac And Radcappen means wheelcover in German... go figger
