I know what milspec means. My AR-15 is milspec :-) Chris P.S. There is a store in KC that sells out of tolerance aircraft stuff...prolly should check it out...

Don't know where my '78 Pinto is now, but the owner is driving around with after-market stuff held down by milspec aircraft-quality nuts/bolts, and sports a very expensive aircraft clock (went out of tolerances for aircraft use, which means it loses a second every few centuries). First, I'll give a short update... I /had/ a 1984 300sd (color: hellenfeinbein(sp?)) until the weekend before thanksgiving. To shorten the story, I was rear-ended hard enough that the sunroof popped open (1/2"), the left side of the trunk pan tore loose from the quarter panel on the side, and the paint at the rear of the back doors chipped on the body. (this happened a week or two after putting a new alternator/harness/pulley) on it.... Anyhow I figured it was toast so Laura and I went shopping... we picked up a 1999 E300Td (wooT! can you say "rocket"?), 101kmi, a few issues (driver headrest didn't work (cracked solder joint) and druken climate LCD)... we paid $18.5k for it. Anyhow, I drive ~190-195mi/day... about 4kmi later I noticed the smell of heated fuel... The top of the IP is wet, and it uses the same set of O-rings and seals as the other OM60x engines (actually bosch calls for the same exact part number, at least between the om606.91x, om606.96x, and the om603.96x's), so I am guessing it is the same problem as the others... the pump is wet around the delivery valves, not the union nuts on the pipes. I have in front of me (thanks to our sponsor and visa :) the proper socket, the clips and shims, etc for the lines, and the proper bosch o-rings and seals (procured from the local bosch distributor-I bought a dozen o-rings and 8 seals, so I can pinch o-rings and drop seals in the dirt to my heart's content<g>). I'll be borrowing a couple of torque wrenches from my dad this weekend (20-240in-lbs and 10-100ft-lbs), and am aware of the 30-30-30+5 torque sequence (I have the instructions fron WIS on how to do the job on a 606.91x but it did not have for the 606.96x's!!) I was wondering if anyone had done this job, and how nasty it was.. the stealership quoted me a minimum of [EMAIL PROTECTED]/hr... I've had occasion to replace seals in the 617's and its a cakewalk. I understand the newer pumps are more like jewelry, so I was wondering about caveats. BTW when it was all said and done, insurance split the difference between NADA classic average and NADA classic high retail, then added tax and tags, etc... the payout was $8249.75, since the damages exceeded $6k, as at least one new quarter would be involved, as would a new rear pan, etc.) I'm pretty happy all the way around, especially with the rocketship (it can and WILL break loose from the pavement if you stomp on it at a light. You get used to the drive-by-wire once you understand a few things about it, too), but i still pine for the klatta of the 617's. Speaking of 617's, I had an interesting failure mode on Laura's 300D: the glow plug relay failed because it was half-full of water. I opened it up and it literally had a cup of water in it, which must have leaked past the o-ring that sealed it as the ring was split! Oh yeah, i have some 126 stuff up for sale/grabs: (this is for a 1984 300sd, the later half of the year (no tach amp on it) I have: -1 good used (spare) tach (should be the same as a 300sdl) -two new rear rotors, still in the brown paper wrappping/slightly worn box -new set of rear pads -a new (in box) master cylinder -rear spring pads -front sway bar bushings. (I redid the suspension, and these were going to bee too nasty to do, so i figured I would wait until they got bad) -a set or two of wiper refills All of the above parts are likely specific to to the 126. I'll entertain offers. For the rotors, I'd prefer local to Baltimore, since shipping on them would not be cheap (the master cylinder might be costly to ship too) As for the E300TD, I cant wait to take a trip out to grantsville, MD and get it on some of those long upgrades on I-70 in western MD to see what It will do. I'm afraid to find out on anything with less slope. It will loaf at 85-90mph, and the way it winds up, I have no doubt whatsoever that it would wind up the the limit of the H-rated tires, but I don't want to find out if it will, or how much it would cost me to try! (isn't >100mph==jail time in MD and VA?) -j.
