My '83 300D has been chirping on idle for years. It's probably not too high pressure since I never add enough freon to reach max high pressure. I set the belt tension at 70 lbs using the Kriket, so the belt might be a little loose and doing the chirping. Nevertheless, I have no belt problems and the AC works OK.

Elder son reports proper operation and cooling, but is hearing regularly spaced "chirps" from engine compartment during operation.

I was thinking slipping belt, but the speed sensor would catch that, right?
