Keep in mind that even when most of the plutonium is gone, it's not
exactly safe.  It just decays into other radioactive elements, which
then decay themselves, and so on, until millions of years later you have
a slightly radioactive lump of lead.

This same decay process gives depleted uranium the odd characteristic of
initially becoming *more* radioactive over time.
