How about taking it to a transmission shop to see if there is any reasonable fix?

Former owner said took it to a tranny shop and he told her something about a stuck piston. I've since found out some other things she said weren't true, so I'm discounting that a bit. Then there's the general assumption that tranny shop mechanics just know how to disassemble, install rebuild kits and adjust to specs and bill $3k without needing to know how to diagnose.

One of my first thoughts was to take the tranny man from the local Ford dealer out to lunch, assuming they actually fix transmissions there.

Or finding a used transmission and putting it in?

Found a used tranny for $275, and used valve bodies are $50-75 on eBay.
I'd hate to do either and then find out I still have the problem because it was in the wiring outside the tranny.

The Ford one would probably tell a lot, and they'd probably charge me half the price of the used tranny to hook it up. Better yet would be finding somebody who knows how the trans works and what could possibly prevent a mechanically sound trans from downshifting into first when it upshifts into first reliably. The really stupid part is that I didn't bother to hook up my basic OBD-II box to it. I should do that and look at the bulkhead connector this afternoon.
