Silver Oxide is better than alkaline, but they're interchangeable.

If it's not so old (less than 30 years), it might take a higher voltage lithium cell, but those are usually larger diameter and you won't find a 1.4-1.5v battery that will fit if it's lithium that you need.

You don't want an air activated hearing aid battery, those things have a very short shelf life once you break the seal on them.
