It is my understanding that one doesn't need a gauge set in this situation. Aren't there bubbles showing in the sight glass if the system is low? Adding refrigerant (with the compressor running) until the bubbles go away restores cooling. Or at least that is the way I always did it. I think. It's been a long time.

     I'd go through and tighten all the connections first.
