I found a couple of ways to do this, and there are probably more:

First you need a dongle, either Bluetooth or WiFi. This is usually determined
by the device you're going to run the software on. I use an iPad, so I went
WiFi. These can be found in all sorts of configurations on places like Amazon.
My WiFi dongle was about $USD 25.

Once you decide on a device, ideally a tablet or smartphone, the operating
system will determine what apps are available. A very popular and robust one
that runs on Android systems is called "Torque". It works off Bluetooth.

I run an iOS app called Dash Commander that uses WiFi on my iPad.

The app I use provides all sorts of real time data as well as OBDII-II codes.
You can program multiple vehicles in it as well, so when you move the dongle
around the data gets saved for that vehicle.

The only thing I have found as a negative is that the app is a major power hog.
I was using it on my phone one day and the phone shut down due to overheating.
