1931 Clessie Cummins installs his Diesel in a race car. It runs at 162
km/h in Daytona, and 138 km/h in Indianapolis where it places 12th.

And he completed without a single pitstop - a first!

highlights for me at the museum in Stuttgart
was seeing the 260D on display.

I found a few briefs about diesel developments in the US about the same
time frame. Perhaps the development of the 260D was inspired by Clessie
Cummins. This webpage has a long and detailed history of diesel developments.
 From http://www.dieselduck.ca/library/other/prime_movers.htm

1929 In Indianapolis, Clessie Cummins manages to fit his 6.25 liters Diesel
engine into a 1925 Packard, seven passenger car. He drives it to New York
for the Auto Show where he gets the "cold shoulder" officially- but Ford
and GM executives ask for private demonstration.

1931 Caterpillar introduces the 1C1 Diesel engine crawler tractor. Although
more expensive, they sell about 10,000 units, 90% of these having Diesel
engines. The Cleveland Tractor Company and International Harvester follow
the example shortly after.

1932 CL Cummins installs a Diesel engine in a Mack 10 tonne bus. They
proceed to drive across the US, 5181 km, in 78 hours 10 minutes. Faster
than any other form of transport - train and such, and all for $21.80 in
fuel cost.

My '82 SD does the same thing. Only locks/unlocks with the key from the
drivers door. Reason being is that the passenger door and trunk locks do no=
t
have the electrical component added. Must have been standard in these model
years.
The drivers door does not have a pneumatic servo, only the electrical
switch.
This eliminates the use of the pump since the drivers door will only
lock/unlock manually.
I converted my '85 W123 (300D Turbo) by adding two 12V electric linear pull
solenoids working a bell crank and linkage to the mechanical lock
mechanismus (push/pull knob) at the drivers door.
